Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative of the Chief Adviser for Rohingya and Priority Affairs, has urged Qatar to strengthen its cooperation in facilitating the repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland. The appeal was made during a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha on Monday evening.
During the discussion, Dr. Khalil highlighted the pressing challenges posed by the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh. He noted that since 2007, nearly 1.2 million Rohingyas have been sheltered in Bangladesh, resulting in significant social, economic, environmental, and security concerns. Dr. Khalil stressed the need for global collaboration to address the crisis effectively.
He also informed the Qatari Minister that, in response to a call by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, the United Nations General Assembly has unanimously agreed to hold an international conference on the Rohingya issue next year. Dr. Khalil expressed hope for Qatar’s active participation in this pivotal event.
In response, Dr. Khulaifi assured Qatar’s comprehensive support and reiterated the country's commitment to addressing the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya people. He emphasized Qatar’s solidarity with Bangladesh in resolving this longstanding issue.
The Foreign Minister also inquired about Bangladesh’s current situation, to which Dr. Khalil assured him of the country’s stability. Dr. Khulaifi conveyed Qatar’s strong support for Bangladesh’s interim government and extended best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus and the people of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Qatar, Md. Nazrul Islam, and Deputy Mission Chief Md. Waliur Rahman also attended the meeting.
The discussion underscored the importance of global partnerships in resolving the Rohingya crisis and further strengthened the ties between Bangladesh and Qatar.
