Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has urged New Zealand to take proactive measures in the international arena to address the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
The President conveyed this message during a meeting with New Zealand's High Commissioner in Dhaka, David Pine, who paid a farewell visit to Bangabhaban on Wednesday.
Shahabuddin highlighted Bangladesh's humanitarian stance in providing refuge to over 1.1 million Rohingya forcibly displaced from Myanmar. However, he underscored the escalating challenges this crisis poses to Bangladesh and its citizens.
Expressing hope for New Zealand's active engagement in international platforms, the President emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
He reminded Pine of New Zealand's swift recognition of Bangladesh following its independence, underscoring the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries. Shahabuddin suggested ample opportunities for further collaboration, particularly in areas such as trade and investment.
The President advocated for enhanced exchange visits between public and private sectors of both nations to unlock the full potential of their partnership.
