March 17th, marks a significant day in Bangladesh's calendar as the nation celebrates the 104th birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, affectionately known as Bangabandhu, and National Children's Day. This convergence of events symbolizes the deep reverence Bangladeshis hold for their founding father and their commitment to nurturing the nation's youth and future.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, born on this day in 1920 in Tungipara village, Gopalganj district, played an indelible role in shaping Bangladesh's history. His leadership and unwavering determination ignited the fight for independence, leading to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. From his early days as a teenager involved in active politics, Bangabandhu co-founded the Bangladesh Chhatra League in 1948 and later the Awami League in 1949. Following pivotal movements such as the partition and independence movement of '47, language movement of '52, united front election of '54, education movement of '62, six-point movement of '66, and the mass uprising of '69, with his profound political acumen and selflessness, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was established as the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation in the historic elections of '70. His iconic "Joy Bangla" speech continues to resonate with Bangladeshis. The speech alongside documentaries chronicling the struggle for independence, and Bangabandhu's mausoleum in Tungipara are revisited to honor his Legacy.
Simultaneously, March 17th is also observed as National Children's Day, celebrating the future of Bangladesh – its children. Schools organize art competitions, cultural performances, and educational programs, while families enjoy picnics and recreational activities in parks across the country.
In the words of a local educator, "Bangabandhu's vision for Bangladesh was one where children have the opportunity to thrive. By celebrating Children's Day on his birthday, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing and empowering our young generation."
In separate messages, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Mohammed Shahabuddin paid respect to the visionary leader who set the groundwork for Bangladesh's independence. "March 17 is a memorable day in the history of the Bangalee nation," stated President Mohammed Shahabuddin. "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, the greatest Bangalee of all time, and the mastermind behind an independent and sovereign Bangladesh, was born on this day in 1920 in the secluded Gopalganj village of Tungipara."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recalled Bangabandhu's lifelong political aspirations, saying, "The main goal of this world-renowned leader with a keen memory and far-sightedness was to liberate the Bengali nation from the chains of subjugation." The nation's profound respect and fondness for Bangabandhu are reflected in the prime minister's remarks.
