A boat carrying 31 Rohingya including 2 BGP of Myanmar entered St. Martin due to ongoing conflict between Arakan Army and Junta forces in Rakhine, Myanmar. In the early hours of Friday (July 5) a boat carrying 33 passengers ran aground in North Golarchar on the island of St. Martin. It includes two armed members of Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) and 31 Rohingya. Among them, 10 women, 10 men, 11 children and 2 Myanmar BGP officials. Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Adnan Chowdhury said that Myanmar's BGP along with Rohingyas have taken shelter in Saint Martin. I learned that they anchored here because the engine of the boat was damaged in the rain. Our BGB and Coast Guard are working on the matter. According to locals, fighting between junta forces and rebels in Maungdaw, Myanmar's Rakhine state, has intensified for days. In such a situation, the residents are taking shelter elsewhere. As part of this, the boat carrying the Rohingya traveled from Maungdaw town to Sittwe town on a Myanmar Navy vessel. Midway the boat got caught in the net and the engine stopped. Later sheltered at the north west beach of Saint Martin due to rain and storm. Locals saw the matter and informed the law enforcement agencies. Later they were taken to a hotel. In this regard, Chairman of Saint Martin's Union Parishad, Mujibur Rahman said, a boat from Myanmar entered here due to stormy winds. Besides the Rohingyas, there are also two BGP members on the boat. They are now in the custody of BGB and Coast Guard. However, there was no comment from Teknaf's BGB and Coast Guard regarding the incursion into St. Martin. Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon in Cox's Bazar on Teknaf border in Myanmar's Rakhine state, mortar shells and heavy shelling were heard in a clash between the Arakan Army and armed forces. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard members have increased their patrols due to fierce clashes between the Myamar's army and the Arakan Army. However, besides preventing border infiltration, BGB members are ready to deal with any situation, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of Teknaf-2 BGB battalion.
