In a significant diplomatic encounter, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Myanmar's leader Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday in Nay Pyi Taw. The meeting underscored the mutual commitment of both nations to support each other on matters of core national interest.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the enduring strength of China-Myanmar relations, noting that these ties have withstood historical challenges and continue to thrive.
Reaffirming China's longstanding policy of friendship towards all people of Myanmar, Wang emphasized that China remains committed to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. He stressed that China respects Myanmar's political traditions and the developmental path it has chosen, tailored to its unique national circumstances.
"We appreciate the Myanmar side's adherence to the one-China principle and its firm support for the Chinese side on issues concerning China's core interests," Wang stated, making clear China's firm support for Myanmar in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity.
As a neighboring ally, Wang reiterated China's opposition to chaos and conflict within Myanmar, external interference in Myanmar's internal affairs, and any efforts to disrupt the relationship between China and Myanmar or tarnish China's image.
Wang also conveyed to Min Aung Hlaing that China's continued reforms and the pursuit of modernization would create new opportunities for global development, particularly benefiting neighboring countries like Myanmar. He expressed China's willingness to deepen cooperation in various fields, while urging Myanmar to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and projects within its borders.
The discussion also touched upon the need to maintain peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border, with a call for joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes and foster a secure environment for bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
In response, Min Aung Hlaing affirmed Myanmar's strong commitment to its relationship with China, emphasizing that Myanmar values the development of China-Myanmar friendship and firmly upholds the one-China principle. He expressed Myanmar's dedication to being a reliable and friendly neighbor to China.
Looking ahead to the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year, Min Aung Hlaing proposed joint celebrations to enhance the traditional friendship and further develop bilateral ties. He also acknowledged China's constructive role in promoting peace talks in northern Myanmar and expressed hope for continued Chinese support in maintaining domestic stability and achieving political reconciliation.
Min Aung Hlaing further assured that Myanmar is ready to continue collaborating with China in tackling transnational crimes, such as Internet gambling and wire fraud, and emphasized that Myanmar will not tolerate any actions that threaten China's security and interests.
