Bangladesh has initiated discussions on the objectives and framework for the forthcoming International Conference on the Rohingya Crisis, set to be convened by the United Nations in 2025. This initiative follows a consensus resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly earlier this year.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Adviser on Rohingya Crisis and Priority Issues, met with UN General Assembly President Ambassador Philemon Yang in New York to deliberate on the matter, as conveyed in a statement on Tuesday (December 31).

The concept for the conference was proposed by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, during his address at the UN General Assembly in September 2024. The aim is to facilitate a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the Rohingya crisis.

In the discussions held on Monday, Dr. Rahman reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to fully support the UN in organizing the conference. He noted the growing interest within the international community regarding the conference and its potential outcomes.

Dr. Rahman updated Ambassador Yang on the latest political developments in the region, emphasizing Bangladesh’s active efforts to engage all relevant stakeholders for the sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

The talks also underscored the urgency of early repatriation, highlighting its critical importance for regional peace and stability. Additionally, the emerging need for humanitarian aid in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, given recent developments, was discussed.

Ambassador Yang praised Bangladesh’s proactive stance on pressing global issues within the UN. As the convenor of the International Conference, he pledged his full support to ensure broad participation and a practical resolution to the crisis.

He expressed gratitude to Dr. Rahman for the outreach and reaffirmed his willingness to collaborate closely to ensure the success of the conference.
