The European Union (EU) has expressed its willingness to be a long-term partner in the sustainable development of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Charles Whiteley, conveyed this commitment during a courtesy meeting with the Adviser to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Supradip Chakma.

The meeting took place on Tuesday (March 18) at the Chittagong Hill Tracts Complex in Bailey Road, Dhaka. Discussions covered various aspects of EU assistance, including regional development, environmental conservation, and sustainable livelihood improvements in the hill tracts.

Ambassador Whiteley assured special EU support and investment in key areas such as livelihood development, water crisis mitigation, environmental protection, erosion control, ecotourism, and renewable energy.

Praising the EU's contributions, Adviser Supradip Chakma said, "There are ample opportunities for investment in quality education, water crisis solutions in remote areas, sustainable livelihood development, environment-friendly brick production, and renewable energy in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. EU support in these areas is crucial for our progress."

In response, Ambassador Whiteley expressed particular interest in investing in solar energy and other renewable energy sources in the region. He also called for discussions on expanding the market for indigenous fruits and vegetables from the hill tracts.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts hold immense economic potential, with opportunities to become a hub for sustainable industries and eco-friendly tourism. With its rich natural resources and unique cultural heritage, the region presents significant possibilities for both local and international investment.

Adviser Supradip Chakma extended his gratitude to the EU for its keen interest and support in the development of the hill tracts and expressed hope for strengthening future collaborative initiatives.
