A new surge of violence has gripped Manipur, as multiple attacks and killings were reported across several districts. At least five individuals lost their lives in fresh clashes early this morning in Jiribam district, approximately 230 km from Imphal, the state capital. The violence erupted when suspected Kuki insurgents targeted Nungchappi village.

Police reports indicate that one person was fatally shot in his sleep, while five others were killed during a subsequent exchange of gunfire between two rival communities. Among the deceased were three hill-based militants involved in the confrontation. Earlier in the day, Kakching district also witnessed gunfire and bombings.

On Friday, rocket attacks in Bishnupur district claimed the life of one person and injured five others. The first attack occurred around 4:30 am, damaging two structures in Tronglaobi. A second rocket struck near the residence of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng in Moirang town, killing an elderly man and wounding several others, including a 13-year-old girl. Other bomb attacks in the district also resulted in injuries.

In response to these incidents, Manipur Police have deployed anti-drone systems in the region, with plans to acquire additional systems and anti-drone guns. Security forces and police teams are conducting combing operations in the nearby hill ranges, and a military helicopter has been dispatched for aerial patrols.

Manipur Police have deployed anti-drone systems in the region and are reportedly in the process of purchasing more of such systems and anti-drone guns.

On Friday night, residents in Bishnupur and Imphal East districts switched off their lights following multiple drone sightings, heightening fears. Drones were reportedly seen in several areas, including Narainsena, Nambol Kamong, and Shantipur, causing panic among locals.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh convened an emergency meeting on Saturday with ruling coalition leaders to address the escalating violence. The discussions focused on the recent attacks on civilians by armed groups in elevated hill areas.

The situation in Manipur has been volatile since early September, marked by increased use of drones, RPGs, and advanced weaponry. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) issued an ultimatum to the Indian Armed Forces, demanding immediate action to restore order within five days, warning of drastic consequences if no steps are taken. COCOMI has expressed dissatisfaction with the central forces, particularly the Assam Rifles, accusing them of mishandling the crisis.

In a united display of protest, thousands of residents from five districts in the Imphal Valley formed human chains on Friday to condemn the violence. Organized by COCOMI, the protest drew students, women, and local residents, with participants chanting slogans and holding placards calling for peace and action against the violence. The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has claimed over 200 lives since May of last year, and the recent introduction of drones has escalated tensions further.
