Foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain has called for establishing seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China through Myanmar, emphasizing the mutual benefits such a route could bring.

“We need seamless connectivity between Bangladesh and China, and the most viable route passes through Myanmar,” Touhid stated, stressing the importance of a stable Myanmar and the sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to the Rakhine State.

“We hope for the return of a peaceful and stable Myanmar, including the return of the Rohingyas to the Rakhine State with rights and security, so that this connectivity can be established to ensure the mutual benefit of our people,” he added.

The foreign adviser made these remarks at the inauguration of an international conference on “China-South Asia Civilization and Connectivity: History and Contemporary Issues,” held at North South University in Dhaka.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s strategic location and economic potential, Touhid reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to fostering beneficial regional connectivity. “This would go a long way in driving economic growth, reducing poverty, and enhancing cultural exchanges,” he noted.

Touhid underlined the growing significance of regional cooperation in addressing global challenges, including climate change and economic uncertainty. “In this era of global challenges, it is imperative that we work together with China, not just as strategic partners but as friends,” he remarked.

Referring to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, in which Bangladesh is a key partner, Touhid described it as embodying the spirit of shared prosperity. “The development of infrastructure, trade corridors, and people-to-people exchanges under this initiative aligns seamlessly with aspirations for sustainable development and regional integration,” he observed.

He further highlighted the evolving Bangladesh-China relationship, recently elevated to a “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.” “This new partnership is built on the very foundations of trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision of a brighter future,” Touhid said.

However, he cautioned against contemporary challenges such as geopolitical tensions, climate change, and economic disparities, urging collective action. “As responsible neighbours, China and South Asian nations must work together to ensure peace, stability, and development in the region,” he emphasized.

Touhid also praised the transformative energy of Bangladesh’s youth, referring to it as the spirit of a “New Bangladesh.” “This renewed sense of purpose... is a commitment to building a more inclusive, equitable, and innovative society while redefining our role on the global stage,” he stated.

The conference was jointly organized by the China-South Asia Center for Sociocultural Studies at North South University and Yunnan University, China. Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and NSU vice-chancellor professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury also addressed the opening ceremony.
