The government remains steadfast in its decision to prevent the entry of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh, Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated on Monday (December 22). Speaking at a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Day event, he clarified the government’s stance on the issue.
“There will be no change to our decision. We will not allow Rohingya people to enter under any circumstances,” he said. “However, on humanitarian grounds, we may consider exceptions for the sick and elderly, especially given the ongoing conflict in their region.”
The advisor highlighted the challenges at the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, now controlled by the Arakan Army. “The Arakan Army has seized the entire border area, making communication with them difficult for the BGB. To establish contact, the BGB has to approach their ships, and even then, it remains unofficial,” he explained.
Despite the challenges, the government is actively working to address the situation, the advisor assured.
When questioned about the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, he mentioned that the chief advisor has assigned “special responsibility” to a designated individual. “We are hopeful for a positive outcome soon,” he added.
In the last 18 to 24 months, approximately 60,000 Rohingya have entered Bangladesh, according to the advisor.
