An official from the Indonesian government has revealed plans to target 1.5 million Chinese tourists in 2024, aiming to double last year's figure. According to Wisnu Sindhutrisno, director of Regional Tourism Marketing at Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, young people comprised a significant portion of last year's Chinese tourist arrivals, making up approximately 65%. Sindhutrisno noted that these tourists typically opt for longer stays, lasting around 5 to 7 days, and show a preference for adventurous activities, nature, and culture.

The anticipated influx of Chinese tourists is expected to contribute to a more equitable distribution of tourism benefits across Indonesia, as stated by Sindhutrisno.

In 2023, Indonesia welcomed over 700,000 Chinese tourists, a number lower than that of neighboring countries such as Thailand, which received 3.5 million, and Vietnam, which welcomed 1.7 million.

Indonesia is also considering offering visa exemptions for Chinese tourists, following similar initiatives by Thailand and Malaysia. Currently, there are 13 airlines operating direct flights from China to Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Thailand is aiming to attract 8 million Chinese tourists this year, following an agreement between both countries to waive visas for each other's citizens starting in March.
