India has expressed its expectation that the Bangladesh government will take necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of minority communities, following reports of recent incidents.

Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, addressed the issue during a daily press briefing in New Delhi on Friday. He reiterated India’s longstanding position on the protection of minorities in Bangladesh.

"As you know, when it comes to minorities, we have stated on multiple occasions, even at high levels, that they should be protected. We expect that the government in Bangladesh will provide security to the people of the minority community and fulfill their needs," Jaiswal said.

This statement came in response to questions regarding reports of vandalism during Durga Puja festivities in Bangladesh. Jaiswal emphasized that such incidents, including the desecration of idols, are unacceptable. "Incidents like these are not right, they are not good," he said.

"The message of Durga Puja is one of joy and celebration. We extend our best wishes to those celebrating Durga Puja, not only in India but across the world. We hope this festival brings prosperity and happiness to everyone's life. It is also our wish that the security of minorities, including during such important cultural events, is ensured," Jaiswal added.

Responding to queries about Bangladesh recalling ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, including India, Jaiswal termed it an "internal matter" of Bangladesh. "In any country, whether ours or others, it is up to the government to appoint or recall ambassadors. This is their internal matter," he remarked.

On Bangladesh’s interim government’s call to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), the spokesperson underlined India's commitment to regional cooperation but cited existing challenges. "We attach deep importance to regional connectivity and cooperation, which is why we have prioritized Bimstec. As for SAARC, we want to strengthen regional cooperation, but there are reasons—one particular country’s actions—that have stalled progress in that format," Jaiswal said, indirectly referring to Pakistan.

India, he reiterated, remains focused on fostering regional collaboration through other platforms like Bimstec.
