In a recent development, Myanmar junta troops have successfully retaken the town of Momeik (Mongmit) in northern Shan State, following the retreat of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied resistance forces. The aftermath of this reoccupation has been marked by reported violence, with at least eight residents losing their lives and houses being torched by the junta soldiers.

The town witnessed a clash on January 18 when a combined force of the KIA, All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF), and People’s Defense Force attacked Momeik. They declared control over the town on January 25 after defeating junta positions, including the police station. However, the triumphant moment was short-lived, as the resistance forces retreated the same evening, paving the way for junta troops to return and wreak havoc on the town, according to fleeing residents.

Reports indicate that junta soldiers are actively working to sow division within Momeik, allegedly forcing Muslim detainees to burn houses. A volunteer assisting displaced individuals shared a distressing account, stating, "They told Muslims to set fire to houses with torches, threatening to kill them if they refused. They took photographs. I believe the regime will use the photos to spread propaganda and stir religious hatred by claiming Muslims are torching houses and religious buildings."

The situation in Momeik is dire, with junta troops blockading the town and reportedly killing at least eight residents, including Muslims. Residents who remained trapped in the town during the conflict found themselves in peril, either losing their lives or being arrested by junta soldiers. Efforts were made to offer transportation out of the town to those who were willing to leave, but some believed they would be safe if they stayed indoors. Unfortunately, many faced tragic consequences.

A resident assisting displaced people expressed sympathy, stating, "After what happened, we can only feel sorry for them. We learned that around eight people, including four Muslims, were killed."

Contrary to junta media claims of a successful counteroffensive against the KIA, Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and People’s Defense Force, residents assert that the KIA troops did not face defeat but rather strategically retreated, allowing junta soldiers to regain control of the town. Momeik has suffered extensive damage from junta air and artillery strikes, leaving the community in distress.

Junta media has accused the KIA and its allies of arson, claiming that religious buildings, schools, houses, and healthcare facilities were set ablaze during their presence in Momeik. Local community organizations report that approximately two-thirds of Momeik have been destroyed, and over 40 civilians, trapped in the crossfire, lost their lives.

The major market in Momeik also fell victim to junta bombing raids, exacerbating the town's challenges. Momeik, located in northern Shan State and bordered by Kachin State’s Mansi Township to the north, Mandalay Region’s Mogoke Township to the south, and Thabbeikyin Township to the west, has been a hotspot for ethnic armed groups, further complicating the region's dynamics.

As Myanmar continues to grapple with political turmoil and violence, the people of Momeik find themselves caught in the crossfire, facing displacement, destruction, and an uncertain future.
