In a tragic incident, a military airstrike in Myanmar claimed the lives of over 16 individuals, targeting a Buddhist monastery in the Magwe region.
Reports from the scene, relayed by DPA through an eyewitness involved in rescue efforts, indicate that around 50 others were injured in the assault.
The airstrike occurred following a meeting at the monastery in the Saw community. Attendees included local defense forces and village chiefs from nearby areas, actively opposing the military junta.
Among the victims were the abbot of the monastery and several monks, most of whom suffered severe burns.
The eyewitness described the force of the bomb as devastating, and fears remain that the death toll may increase.
Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has been subjected to frequent aerial attacks on civilian targets. This latest tragedy in the Magwe region adds to a grim tally of atrocities.
Reports suggest that over 500 individuals, including children and the elderly, have lost their lives in such attacks between February 2021 and October 2023.
