The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allied forces have launched a series of attacks on Myanmar junta positions in the jade-mining hub of Hpakant Township in Kachin State. The conflict escalated as the KIA targeted junta troops and police in Hsengtaung village, located within the Seikmu village tract, during the night of Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Civilians find themselves trapped in the crossfire, with the KIA's offensive leading to a buildup of anti-regime forces in Hpakant Township, raising concerns about indiscriminate junta airstrikes and shelling. A local pastor expressed the dire situation, stating, “Everywhere is on alert, and there are no volunteers or organisations to help.” Civilians are trapped in their homes, facing the grim reality that nowhere is safe.

On Monday, the KIA successfully attacked and seized a major junta hilltop in Tar Ma Khan village within the township. During the operation, approximately 15 junta troops were apprehended, along with arms and ammunition. The village police station was also set ablaze by the resistance fighters. A KIA source revealed that their forces are currently targeting a large hilltop outpost held by Light Infantry Battalion 119, with the junta resorting to airstrikes in defence.

Hpakant Township is renowned for its vast jade mines, serving as the primary source of the world’s imperial jade. However, the ongoing conflict threatens not only the lives of civilians but also the economic stability of the region. Repeated junta shelling has been reported in villages surrounding the township, exacerbating the crisis. The situation remains tense, with analysts closely monitoring developments in the area.

The clashes in Hpakant Township have drawn international attention, with human rights organisations and foreign governments expressing alarm. Calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians have intensified. The United Nations are closely monitoring the situation, urging all parties to seek a peaceful resolution.
