Myanmar’s military-backed government has announced the discovery of a rare giant ruby in the country’s famed Mogok gemstone region, describing it as one of the most exceptional stones found in recent years.

State media published photographs of President and former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing examining the 2.2-kilogram (4.8-pound) ruby at his office. Officials said the gemstone was recently unearthed in the Mogok area of Mandalay region, internationally known for producing some of the world’s finest rubies.

In a government statement, authorities described the stone as “exceptionally large, rare, and difficult to find,” noting that it possesses a purplish-red colour with yellowish undertones and a high-quality colour grade. The administration added that although the ruby is smaller than a 21,450-carat stone discovered in the same region in 1996, the newly found gem is considered more valuable because of its superior clarity and overall quality.

According to France 24, the Mogok valley has historically been associated with legendary “pigeon-blood” rubies, gemstones highly prized in international markets for their intense red colour and rarity. The region has long attracted emperors, traders and rival powers seeking control over its lucrative gemstone resources.

Myanmar’s ruby industry remains one of the most valuable gemstone sectors in the world, with top-quality Mogok rubies often selling for millions of dollars. However, the industry has also faced longstanding criticism over weak regulation, opaque trading practices and concerns surrounding military-linked business interests.

The discovery comes at a politically sensitive moment for Myanmar. The country has remained under military influence since the 2021 coup that removed the elected civilian government and triggered widespread unrest and armed conflict across several regions. Last month, Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as civilian president following a tightly controlled election widely criticized by opposition groups and international observers.

Analysts say the government’s promotion of the ruby discovery may also serve to highlight Myanmar’s natural wealth at a time when the country continues to face international scrutiny over its political and humanitarian situation.
