This incident marks a significant violation of a China-brokered ceasefire signed earlier this year. Although the ceasefire had temporarily halted hostilities in recent months. That have seen escalating violence as the junta faces widespread opposition since its 2021 coup.

Last week, junta leader Min Aung Hlaing met with China's Premier Li Qiang, asserting Myanmar’s willingness to engage in peace talks with armed groups. Meanwhile, China, a key arms supplier to Myanmar. Beijing has expressed concern over the turmoil along its border. Ethnic armed groups and resistance forces have gained control of border areas.
