India, emphasizing its close friendship and partnership with Bangladesh, has expressed its desire for "peaceful elections" as the country gears up for its 12th national election on January 7, 2024.
Arindam Bagchi, the Spokesperson at the Ministry of External Affairs, conveyed in a weekly briefing in New Delhi on Friday, "We will continue to support Bangladesh’s vision to build a stable, peaceful and progressive nation." He reiterated that India's stance remains consistent, emphasizing that the upcoming election is a domestic matter for Bangladesh, and it is the prerogative of the Bangladeshi people to determine their own future.
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen echoed the sentiment, expressing a commitment to the continuation of democratic values in the country and a strong aversion to the undermining of democracy. Minister Momen emphasized, "We do not want terrorism. These are the goals of the Western countries. We are with them."
Highlighting the aspirations for a transparent electoral process, Minister Momen stated that Bangladesh aims to demonstrate its capability to conduct a free, fair, and widely accepted election. He further underscored the historical significance, noting, "We are the only country where people sacrificed their lives for democracy."
