President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a change in plans for the Malé Commercial Port, originally slated for development in Kaafu atoll Gulhifalhu by the previous government. The new decision involves relocating the port to Thilafushi within the same atoll.

During the inauguration ceremony of the Velana International Airport development project, President Muizzu cited the lack of feasibility in developing the port at Gulhifalhu as the primary reason for the shift. He expressed that, in light of this, the decision has been made to move the port to Thilafushi.

In alignment with this decision, President Muizzu emphasized the intention to develop an international-class port in Thilafushi. He highlighted that this shift, coupled with the airport development, would create extensive economic opportunities for the Maldives.

The ongoing land reclamation for the Gulhifalhu port construction is being financed through India's Line of Credit facility, covering 75 percent of the total cost, estimated at USD 400 million (MVR 6.1 billion). The new port, set to have a capacity of 400,000 20-foot containers, is expected to be completed by 2026. India's Exim Bank, in August, announced preparations to open a tender for the port's construction.
