Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus has appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for assistance in repatriating over one million Rohingya refugees currently residing in camps across Bangladesh.
This appeal was made during a phone conversation with UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi on Monday, September 2. Grandi initiated the call to congratulate Prof. Yunus on his recent appointment as the leader of Bangladesh's interim government.
In the conversation, Grandi commended Prof. Yunus, acknowledging the significant challenge he has undertaken in rebuilding Bangladesh, according to a statement from the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.
Grandi also extended an invitation to Prof. Yunus to participate in a meeting on the Rohingya crisis, which will take place on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.
During the discussion, Grandi informed the chief adviser of his plans to visit Bangladesh in October. Both leaders deliberated on the Rohingya crisis, particularly the situation of thousands displaced by the ongoing conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
Additionally, Prof. Yunus sought UNHCR’s support in securing a brighter future for Rohingya children who are growing up in the refugee camps in Bangladesh.
