In Agartala, Tripura, the CPI-M-led Left parties held a major rally on Saturday (5 October) to protest against reported atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh. Thousands of protesters, braving rain, gathered in the streets to call for the protection of all minorities in Bangladesh, regardless of their religion. The protest, however, raises questions about the broader implications of externalizing minority issues for domestic political gain.

Manik Sarkar, former Chief Minister of Tripura and CPI-M Politburo member, addressed the rally, urging the majority population in Bangladesh to actively defend minority communities and hold the caretaker government accountable. Sarkar emphasized that protecting the rights of minorities is critical to fostering peace in the region.

India’s Left parties have echoed similar concerns, urging Bangladesh to take swift action against groups inciting violence. Sarkar highlighted that the majority of Bangladeshis are peaceful and wish for communal harmony, but externalizing internal conflicts could disrupt the region’s stability.

Other organizations, such as the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and various religious groups, have also staged rallies in northeastern India, expressing concerns for minorities in Bangladesh. Chakma leaders recently submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Modi, calling for a reassessment of diplomatic relations with Bangladesh until minority rights are assured. The memorandum cited violent incidents in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where tribal communities claim they have been targeted in recent weeks.

International Relations Experts say, India’s northeastern states express solidarity with minorities in Bangladesh, the situation reflects the complexities of cross-border ethnic and religious issues. While support for minority rights is essential, stoking sentiments without a nuanced approach risks escalating tensions rather than fostering constructive dialogue and peace. A balanced perspective that respects national sovereignty while advocating for human rights is crucial for maintaining regional harmony.
