South Korea has announced plans to allocate $10 million in humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in 2024. This marks a significant increase from the previous year’s contribution, more than tripling the amount, according to the South Korean embassy in Dhaka.

The aid will be distributed through various international organizations operating in Bangladesh, including the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Since 2017, South Korea has consistently provided $3 to $5 million annually to support Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh, in close collaboration with the Bangladeshi government and international agencies.

In addition to financial support, South Korea has also made its first rice donation of 15,000 tons, sufficient to feed 1 million Rohingyas for 1.5 months, further increasing the total humanitarian aid provided this year.

Over the past seven years, South Korea’s contributions have funded various humanitarian initiatives, including the provision of LPG, education, and food as part of the Joint Response Plan (JRP).

“This year, funding for empowering Rohingya women and youth through UNFPA has been newly added to our support for humanitarian activities,” the embassy stated.

The South Korean government hopes that this increased funding will significantly contribute to the implementation of the Joint Response Plan 2024 and ensure essential humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
