Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta has assured Bangladesh of his commitment to securing ASEAN’s support for the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar. During a joint press conference with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, on Sunday(December 15), Ramos-Horta emphasized his dedication to addressing the crisis.
"His Excellency has assured us, as an ASEAN member, that he will do his utmost to ensure ASEAN supports Bangladesh in resolving the Rohingya issue," said Dr. Yunus.
The bilateral meeting between the two leaders focused on strategies to generate international support for the safe return of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar. "We discussed in detail how this goal can be achieved and how to mobilize global opinion in favor of repatriation," Yunus added.
President Ramos-Horta, whose country is set to officially join ASEAN soon, also expressed interest in strengthening trade and diplomatic ties with Bangladesh. Dr. Yunus highlighted Ramos-Horta's commitment as a key ally in advocating for Bangladesh within the ASEAN framework.
The two leaders described their discussions as "fruitful," with a shared vision of elevating bilateral relations and exploring new avenues of cooperation.
The Rohingya crisis has posed significant challenges for Bangladesh, straining its resources, economy, and social fabric. Hosting over one million Rohingyas in camps in Cox’s Bazar and other regions, the country faces mounting pressure on its infrastructure, healthcare, and education systems. The prolonged stay of the refugees without a clear resolution also raises concerns about regional stability. Bangladesh has consistently reiterated the urgent need for their safe, dignified, and voluntary return to Myanmar.
