The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, delivered a stark warning to the UN Human Rights Council today, describing the human rights situation in Myanmar as a "never-ending nightmare."
Türk painted a grim picture of escalating armed conflict, widespread human rights violations, and a deepening humanitarian crisis. He highlighted the use of heavy weaponry against civilians, including airstrikes, resulting in a significant rise in civilian casualties, with women and children bearing the brunt of the violence.
The High Commissioner voiced particular concern for the plight of the Rohingya people, who continue to face systematic discrimination, repression, and displacement. He noted that nearly 200 people, including at least 50 Rohingya, have been killed in Rakhine State since November, with communication blackouts further hindering efforts to assess the true scale of the crisis.
Türk urged the international community to refocus its efforts on preventing further atrocities in Myanmar, including taking concrete steps to end the military's access to arms, jet fuel, and foreign currency. He also called for the immediate release of political prisoners, full compliance with international human rights law, and a renewed push for a pathway to the restoration of democracy and civilian rule.
"For the last three years, people in Myanmar have sacrificed everything," Türk concluded, "and kept alive their aspirations for a better and safer future. They need the entire international community to support them."
