Two Bangladeshi nationals were killed after members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire along the border in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria late Friday night, according to a statement issued by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident took place in the Dhajanagar-Pathariyadwar border area, where BSF personnel allegedly fired pellet rounds during a confrontation, leaving two Bangladeshis critically injured. The BSF later informed BGB that both men died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India.
One of the deceased was identified as Md Mursalin, 20, a resident of Dhajanagar village in Kasba upazila.
Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamiul Islam said Mursalin was an 11th-grade student of Gopinathpur Alhaz Shah Alam Degree College.
According to the BGB statement, around 15 Bangladeshi smugglers entered nearly 200 yards inside Indian territory through the Dhajanagar-Pathariyadwar border area around 11:05pm with the assistance of Indian smugglers.
While returning with smuggled goods, the group was intercepted by a patrol team from the Pathariyadwar camp of the 49 BSF Battalion, the statement said.
BGB claimed that at one stage, the Bangladeshi smugglers allegedly attacked BSF personnel, leading to a scuffle and physical altercation.
During the clash, a BSF member fired two rounds of pellets at the group, according to the statement.
The BGB said the commanding officer of the 60 BGB Battalion, also known as Sultanpur Battalion, has contacted the BSF commandant regarding the repatriation of the bodies.
A protest note is being sent to the BSF, while preparations are underway for a flag meeting between the two border forces, the statement added.
BGB also claimed that the two deceased men had previously been directly involved in transporting smuggled goods across the border.
