The United Nations has extended its full support to Bangladesh's interim government as it takes on the significant responsibility of steering the nation through a challenging period.
In a letter addressed to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed hope that the interim government would be instrumental in ending violence, ensuring accountability, and restoring law and order.
“It is my hope that your government will take an inclusive approach, including by taking into account the voices of the youths and women, as well as that of minority and Indigenous communities. I count on the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure the full protection of all citizens and, in particular, of minorities. I also strongly urge you to ensure the well-being of Rohingya refugees, especially in view of the deteriorating situation in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,” the letter, dated August 16, stated.
The UN Secretary-General underscored that Bangladesh is at a critical juncture in its history, with the United Nations firmly supporting efforts to foster an inclusive and prosperous democracy.
He reaffirmed the UN's commitment to working closely with the interim government, providing ongoing support through the Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team to assist the people of Bangladesh.
