Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian support as Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus met Myanmar's Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Administration Council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok, Thailand.

During the meeting, Prof Yunus conveyed his deepest condolences and sympathy to the people of Myanmar in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck on (March 28), resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread destruction.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s prompt humanitarian response, Prof Yunus noted that Dhaka had already dispatched rescue teams to assist in relief operations. He further assured Myanmar of continued support, stating that Bangladeshi ships remain on standby, ready to deliver additional aid as needed.

Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, confirmed that Prof Yunus emphasized Bangladesh’s readiness to stand by its neighbors in times of crisis. “This reflects our unwavering commitment to regional harmony and human dignity,” he said.

In a gesture of diplomatic goodwill, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing congratulated Prof Yunus on Bangladesh assuming the BIMSTEC chairmanship. He expressed hope that under Bangladesh’s leadership, the regional organization would gain fresh momentum and direction.

Bangladesh’s proactive stance in extending aid to Myanmar and promoting inclusive development underscores its growing role as a stabilizing force in South and Southeast Asia. Officials say that under Prof Yunus’ leadership, BIMSTEC is likely to see a stronger focus on equitable regional development, humanitarian collaboration, and people-centric diplomacy.

Observers view Bangladesh’s efforts as a reflection of its broader commitment to balanced regional growth, disaster resilience, and cooperative multilateralism—key priorities for the country as it takes the helm of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
