Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged China to play a stronger role in resolving the prolonged Rohingya crisis, warning that hosting around 1.3 million refugees is putting severe economic, social and environmental pressure on Bangladesh.
He raised the issue during a meeting with Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
According to BSS, Liu said China was aware of the crisis and would convey Tarique's concerns to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The two sides also discussed the proposed Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, trade cooperation and stronger political ties between the CPC and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Liu also expressed China's support for Bangladesh joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
Tarique stressed that Bangladesh-China friendship, established during the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, should be strengthened for future generations.
