Berhampur University in Odisha has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO), an international think tank specializing in transboundary fisheries management issues. The collaboration aims to facilitate joint research in the field of marine ecology, with a specific focus on enhancing livelihood opportunities for fishing communities residing in the Bay of Bengal region.

Situated in the eastern part of India, Berhampur University is strategically located along a 480-km coastal line with the Bay of Bengal. Thousands of people in the state rely on the sea for their livelihoods. Geetanjali Dash, the Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University, highlighted the significance of the agreement in supporting the fishing communities.

The BOBP-IGO, comprised of member countries such as Bangladesh, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, serves as a think tank addressing contemporary national issues related to fisheries management. Additionally, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand are cooperating non-contracting parties.

The signed MoU outlines a five-year plan for various academic activities. These include student and scientist exchanges, collaborative research initiatives, and the exploration of external funding opportunities. The agreement is not limited to students but extends its benefits to researchers and teachers in marine science, environmental science, and other relevant departments at Berhampur University.

The collaborative research efforts will focus on marine ecology and the improvement of livelihoods for fisherfolk. The outcomes of this research are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers in the formulation of state programs. The signing ceremony was attended by Berhampur University Registrar Sachidananda Nayak and P Krishnan, Director of BOBP-IGO, alongside Vice-Chancellor Geetanjali Dash.
