Bangladesh has been unanimously elected to serve as a Vice President of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the premier intergovernmental body tasked with promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.
The decision was finalized on (December 9) during an organizational session of the Council, setting the stage for Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva to join the Council's Bureau from January 1 to December 31, 2025. The Bureau comprises one President and four Vice Presidents, each representing one of the five UN regional groups.
Bangladesh's journey to this prestigious role began in October 2024, when it expressed interest in representing the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) in the Bureau. The APG endorsed Bangladesh's candidacy unanimously, forwarding it for consideration by the full Council membership. This process culminated in unanimous approval, reflecting widespread international support.
This marks the first time Bangladesh will serve as a Vice President of the Human Rights Council since its establishment by the UN General Assembly in 2006. The election highlights the global community's trust in Bangladesh’s leadership, particularly under the guidance of Hon’ble Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, as well as the country’s growing influence in multilateral diplomacy.
