New Delhi has indicated that Bangladesh-related matters could be discussed during the upcoming meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, given the regional geopolitical context.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing a media briefing on Friday, suggested that regional and international issues would be part of the discussions. "There will be discussions on the regional and international situation. I would imagine this might be one of the issues that will come up," he said in response to a journalist’s query about whether Bangladesh-related concerns would be raised.
The question came amid recent incidents in Bangladesh, including vandalism at the historic Dhanmondi-32 residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. However, Misri refrained from confirming whether the issue would be explicitly discussed, stating, "As to whether the issue will come up in discussions in Washington, DC, I can't prejudge right now."
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the United States on February 12-13 at the invitation of President Trump. This will mark his first visit to the U.S. since Trump’s second-term inauguration.
The Indian Foreign Secretary also reiterated India's stance on recent events concerning the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, emphasizing the host country’s responsibility in ensuring the security of diplomatic premises. "We have no doubt that the Bangladesh authorities are fully aware of their responsibilities in this regard," he added.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has expressed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with India, focusing on mutual benefits and securing both nations' interests, according to the interim government.
