In a tragic turn of events, 31-year-old Mohammed Nizam, a Bangladeshi migrant worker, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, marking the first Bangladeshi casualty in the current Israel-Lebanon conflict. The incident occurred in the Grazmiye area on Saturday afternoon as Nizam stopped at a coffee shop on his way to work. The Bangladeshi embassy in Beirut confirmed his identity and reported the incident.
Nizam hailed from Kharera in Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh. Son of Mohammed Abdul Quddus and Mst Anowara Begum, he was remembered by Bangladesh Ambassador to Lebanon, Air Vice Marshal Javed Tanveer Khan, as a dedicated “remittance fighter.” The ambassador expressed his condolences to Nizam’s grieving family and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
This loss underscores the risks faced by expatriate workers in conflict zones, as many, like Nizam, continue to support their families back home despite challenging conditions abroad.
