In an unrecorded speech at a campaign fundraising event, President Joe Biden criticized key U.S. allies Japan and India, along with China and Russia, for their failure to benefit from the economic advantages of migration due to what he termed as “xenophobia.”

Biden, speaking at the event to commemorate the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, emphasized the role of immigrants in driving economic growth, stating, “One of the reasons why our economy’s growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants.”

Biden's unexpected remarks about Japan and India come at a time when he has been actively working to strengthen ties with both countries since taking office in 2021.

Just three weeks ago, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was hosted at the White House for a state dinner, where the two nations celebrated their "unbreakable" partnership. During the visit, Biden emphasized the shared values and commitment to democracy and freedom.

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed to the White House for a state visit last year. Japan and India are also both members of the Quad security grouping.
