Donald Trump was inaugurated today as the 47th president of the United States, returning to the White House after a tumultuous first term and an improbable political comeback. Trump, who was twice impeached and recently convicted of a criminal offense, began his second term with a pledge to restore "strength, prosperity, dignity, and pride" to America.

The inauguration ceremony was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to frigid weather. The location carried heavy symbolism, as it was the site of the January 6, 2021, riot, when Trump supporters attempted to overturn his election defeat. Now, at 78 years old, Trump takes office again with the support of his steadfast MAGA base, vowing a radical shake-up of both domestic and international affairs.

Pre-Inauguration Celebrations
Over the weekend, Trump celebrated his return to power with a party at his Sterling, Virginia, golf club, featuring an Elvis Presley impersonator and a fireworks display. He also addressed a “MAGA Victory” rally at Washington’s Capital One Arena, where he declared, “We won,” and promised a transformative presidency.
“We’re going to stop the invasion of our borders,” Trump told the crowd. “We’re going to unlock the liquid gold that’s right under our feet, bring back law and order, and get radical woke ideology the hell out of our military.”
Senior adviser Stephen Miller previewed Trump's plans to issue an executive order immediately ending what he called a “border invasion” and to implement the “most aggressive, sweeping effort to restore our borders that the world has ever seen.”

A New Agenda for America

Trump has pledged to hit the ground running with a slew of executive orders on his first day. Among his promises are pardons for January 6 rioters, sealing the southern border, and initiating mass deportations of undocumented individuals. According to reports, a major Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation targeting undocumented individuals in Chicago is set to begin Tuesday.
The president-elect also hinted at addressing the prosecutions of January 6 participants, calling them “J6 hostages” and claiming his decisions would bring joy to his supporters.

Inaugural Address and International Attendance

Trump’s inaugural address, billed as unifying, emphasized a departure from the “decline” he attributes to the Biden administration. “Tomorrow at noon, the curtain closes on four long years of American decline, and we begin a brand new day,” Trump declared.
For the first time in U.S. history, foreign leaders, including China’s Vice President Han Zheng, Argentina’s President Javier Milei, and Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni, attended the inauguration.

A Contentious Transition of Power
Outgoing President Joe Biden departed the White House Monday morning with historically low approval ratings, blamed by many Democrats for their party’s loss in the election. In his farewell address last week, Biden warned of the rising influence of oligarchic power and urged Americans to protect democracy.
Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the recent election, also attended the inauguration as she handed over the vice presidency to Republican Senator J.D. Vance. Harris, who took over the Democratic presidential nomination after Biden’s withdrawal, had framed Trump as a threat to democracy during the campaign.
Looking Ahead
As the United States enters this new chapter of Trump’s leadership, the country faces heightened divisions and uncertainty. Trump’s immediate actions, including a focus on border security and the economy, are expected to ignite political debates and protests.
With supporters energized and opponents wary, the nation braces for a presidency that promises to be as eventful and polarizing as his first.
