IBM and L’Oréal, the global leader in beauty, have announced an ambitious collaboration to leverage IBM's generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology to transform cosmetic formulation. This groundbreaking partnership aims to uncover insights from cosmetic formulation data, enabling L’Oréal to use sustainable raw materials while reducing energy and material waste. Together, the companies will develop a custom AI foundation model, the first of its kind in the beauty industry, designed to enhance the performance and consumer satisfaction of L’Oréal products across all categories and regions.

Combining L’Oréal’s unparalleled expertise in cosmetic science with IBM’s cutting-edge AI for scientific discovery, the initiative represents a paradigm shift at the intersection of beauty, chemistry, and technology. By prioritizing renewable and sustainably sourced raw materials, the collaboration aligns with L’Oréal’s “L’Oréal for the Future” goal to ensure most of its formulas are bio-sourced or rooted in the circular economy by 2030.

Stéphane Ortiz, Head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development at L’Oréal Research & Innovation, stated, "This partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, ensuring our products achieve new standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalization." Matthieu Cassier, Chief Transformation & Digital Officer at L’Oréal Research & Innovation, added, “This major alliance with IBM marks an exciting era for innovation, blending unique beauty science expertise with advanced data structuring.”

IBM’s expertise in creating purpose-built, customized AI models further strengthens the initiative’s impact. Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow and Director of IBM Research Zurich, emphasized, "Using IBM's latest AI technology, L’Oréal will derive meaningful insights from its rich formulation data, achieving operational goals and creating high-quality, sustainable products."

The foundation model will analyze extensive datasets of formulations and components to accelerate tasks such as developing new products, reformulating existing ones, and optimizing scale-up production. This will support L’Oréal’s 4,000 researchers worldwide, providing tools to better understand the behaviors of renewable ingredients and fostering the development of sustainable, inclusive, and personalized beauty solutions.

Beyond revolutionizing the beauty industry, this collaboration highlights AI's role in driving social transformation through innovation. Generative AI not only enables companies to create sustainable products but also empowers them to prioritize diversity and inclusivity in their offerings, reflecting the unique needs of consumers. By fostering collaboration across industries, AI solutions like these address global challenges such as resource conservation, inclusivity, and ecological responsibility, paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.

IBM is leading advancements in foundation models beyond language processing, exploring applications in chemistry and other domains. Together, IBM and L’Oréal aim to shape a future where innovation meets sustainability, delivering beauty products as unique as the individuals who use them daily.
