A recent India Today NE survey under the "Mood of the Nation" series indicates that a majority of people in Northeast India support sending former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.

According to the survey, 55% of respondents from the region favor her extradition. The northeastern states, which share a long border with Bangladesh, have shown a stronger inclination toward this stance compared to the rest of India.

Additionally, 16% of respondents in the eight northeastern states believe she should be relocated to a third country, a move that could protect her from legal proceedings in Bangladesh while preserving diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Dhaka. Meanwhile, 23% of respondents in the region believe India should continue to shelter Hasina due to her long-standing alliance with the country. On a national level, 37.6% of respondents share this view.

Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 5 after fleeing Bangladesh during student-led protests. She currently faces over 100 cases in Bangladesh, including charges of murder, mass killings, and crimes against humanity related to the July uprising.

The Bangladesh government formally requested India on December 23 to facilitate her return, but New Delhi has yet to respond.
