Tensions between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan have surged dangerously, sparking international alarm over a potential military confrontation that could destabilize the entire South Asian region.
In the early hours of Wednesday(april29), Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that Islamabad had “credible intelligence” suggesting India was planning an imminent military strike within 24 to 36 hours, using the recent deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, as a pretext. "Any act of aggression will be met with a decisive response," Tarar warned, holding India responsible for "serious consequences" if conflict erupts.
This alarming statement came shortly after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi granted the military "complete operational freedom" in a high-level meeting following the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed—the deadliest incident in the region in recent years. India blames Pakistan-backed militants for the attack, identifying two of the suspects as Pakistani nationals tied to the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

Military activity along the heavily militarized Line of Control (LoC) has escalated, with India reporting gunfire exchanges and Pakistan claiming it shot down an Indian surveillance drone. Diplomatic relations have further deteriorated with mutual recriminations, expulsions, and tightened border restrictions.
Global powers including the United States, China, and the United Nations have voiced urgent calls for restraint. UN Secretary-General António Guterres offered his "Good Offices" to de-escalate the situation during calls with leaders from both countries. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are reportedly preparing direct interventions to prevent a spiral into open conflict.
The intensifying standoff recalls the 2019 Pulwama crisis, which also escalated into cross-border airstrikes and brought the region to the edge of war. Regional actors such as Iran and Saudi Arabia have offered mediation, though no formal process has begun.
As diplomatic pressure mounts, fears are growing that South Asia’s fragile security balance could be shattered by a single miscalculation. With both countries brandishing nuclear arsenals and hardened rhetoric, the world watches anxiously as the specter of another armed conflict looms over Kashmir.
